Diagnosis and management of acute sports injuries

Acute injuries are of sudden onset and commonly involve soft tissues (muscle, tendon, ligament) or bones (fractures) and rarely nerves or other tissue.

Diagnosis is by history and clinical examination with selective use of special tests such as musculoskeletal ultrasound, X Rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerised Tomography (CT) scans, and other imaging tests.

Diagnosis and management of chronic (gradual onset or "overuse") injuries

Gradual onset injuries typical start with mild pain only after exercise and can progress to increasing pain and dysfunction, eventually causing pain that prevents any exercise. Typically these injuries involve soft tissues (mostly tendons but also muscles) but can affect bones (so-called bone stress injuries which can progress to stress fractures). Rarely chronic nerve injuries can result from compression or traction tissue.

Diagnosis is by history and clinical examination with selective use of special tests such as musculoskeletal ultrasound, X Rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerised Tomography (CT) scans and other imaging tests.
